The emperor, obsessed more with his appearance than ruling the land, hosts a lavish fashion show (‘Fashion’). One day, two swindlers disguised as weavers arrive, claiming to make magical fabric that is only visible to the smart and worthy. Intrigued by the prospect of such a fabric, the emperor hires them to create a robe unlike any other (‘Possibilities’).

Eager to see the fabric, the emperor sends his advisers to check on the progress. Though they see nothing, they pretend to admire it, fearing they’ll be deemed unworthy (‘Nothing (Like I’ve Ever Seen)’).

When the emperor finally visits the weavers (‘Smart Dressed Man’), he too sees nothing but, unwilling to appear foolish, he praises the invisible garment. Convinced of its beauty, he prepares for his grand reveal (‘Fabulous’).

At the royal debut (‘Fashion’ reprise), the emperor confidently parades before the crowd. However, instead of admiration, he is met with laughter and jeers, exposed in his foolishness and vanity.
